One of the benefits of restoring your teeth with the help of dentures is the ability to once again enjoy the foods you love. Unfortunately, however, many people don’t realize that with dentures, sometimes things don’t taste quite the same as they remembered. This is because when you have an upper-palate denture, your prosthetic can block some of your tastebuds, preventing you from experiencing food like you used to.
If you’re considering dentures and are concerned about how foods will taste once you have them, keep reading for more information about how you can still make the most of the many menu options available again with your new teeth!
Spicing Things Up
While it is true that you may experience a small loss of flavor with many foods, you will still be able to taste them quite well. Though your dentures may block some tastebuds, they will not block all of them!
Thankfully, if you find your food lacking in spice, you can always add a pinch more as needed. You’ll also get used to the change in flavor, so you’ll know when you might need a little extra oregano or another dash of salt!
Keeping Dentures Clean
Another sneaky culprit that could be making your food taste different with your new dentures is debris. If you don’t clean your dentures well, they can harbor bits of food, plaque, and bacteria that can all affect your tastebuds. To avoid this, be sure to keep your dentures clean (brush after every meal, remove them to brush thoroughly at least once a day, floss them, and remove them to soak overnight) and you won’t encounter any odd flavors during use.
Other Options
In addition to traditional dentures, you may want to consider upgrading to dental implants or implant dentures. As the name implies, these prosthetics are a hybrid of both. They secure to your jaw via several permanent screws, however unlike dental implants, they are still attached to one large denture. This is a bit more cost effective than dental implants, but still provides greater biteforce than dentures and will make it easier to taste a variety of different flavors, too!
Remember, some loss of taste is to be expected with dentures, however you should still be able to enjoy a variety of delicious and flavorful foods with your new teeth! For more information about dentures, implants, or implant dentures, speak to your dentist today.
